Alive Inside – Transforming Alzheimers through Music
Alive Inside is an amazing magical video documentary showing how music can transform the lives of Alzheimer’s patients.
The film took root about three years ago when filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett met social worker Dan Cohen. Mr Cohen is the founder of Music and Memory, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing music to the elderly and infirm. Not just any music though. The music is personalized for the individual. Each of us is touched or moved by certain music from our past. Amazingly this music has the ability to waken Alzheimer’s patients who have not spoken or shown any emotion for years. Alive Inside has played a huge role in the acceptance of music as therapy.
Dan Cohen’s Music and Memory program began with just three nursing homes and has expanded to over 500. Experts see the value in music therapy over the use of anti-psychotic drugs that are so common place in nursing homes. Through the movement is spreading we need more people to become aware and help spread the word.
What if Mom could be treated with music instead of drugs?
I think a lot of people would feel so much better about that. And those who are trying to care for a loved one at home can adopt this form of therapy to help with anxiety and other symptoms of Sundowners. Of course the drug companies would lose money so expect some push back.
