Avoiding the Flu Vaccine

The signs are already up at all of the local pharmacies. Get your flu vaccine now ! Most experts, however, advise against getting the vaccination too early. The chances are that it could wear off before you need it.

Some experts will tell you that the vaccine is safe while others say it is not.

But no one can force someone to take the flu vaccine. Nobody wants to get the flu. Some people believe that if everyone is not vaccinated then more people will be at risk. Others believe that the vaccine could cause serious complications. They also argue that  often doesn’t work.

And there are a growing number of people who for various reasons simply refuse to take the flu vaccine. There are valid arguments on both sides of the fence. If you are one of those people who will not be taking the flu vaccine you may want to consider adding meditation to your daily routine. Even if you do take the vaccine meditation could give your body an extra boost!

Meditation can boost your immune system. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that people who completed eight weeks of meditation training produced more antibodies to a flu vaccine and showed signs of increased activity in brain areas related to positive emotion than people who didn’t meditate.Psychosom Med. 2003 Jul-Aug;65(4):564-70

A Strong Immune System Matters

There is a reason why it is strongly recommended the elderly and the young have the flu vaccine. Typically these groups have immune systems that are not as strong as the rest of the population. A weak immune system means you are more prone to catching viral and bacterial infections. Your system simply cannot fight off the invading disease.

Immunity in action. A healthy immune system can defeat invading pathogens as shown above, where two bacteria that cause gonorrhea are no match for the large phagocyte, called a neutrophil, that engulfs and kills them.

But There Are Other Things You Can Do To Strengthen Your Immune Response

Avoid Flu Vaccine-Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. Likewise, you will want to avoid packaged or processed foods.  An easy way is to follow the parameters of the grocery store and avoid the aisles. This way you will be buying mostly fresh whole foods. The processed foods simply do not supply the nutrition you need to build a strong defense. Don’t smoke. Furthermore, do not breathe in second-hand smoke. Exercise not only builds a healthy outer body but strengthens all of the systems in your body as well. And yes that includes the immune system. Get adequate sleep. Control your blood pressure and drink alcohol in moderation.

Dr. Andrew Weil recommends eating food high in VitaminC to strengthen your immune system. Things like strawberries, oranges, and cantaloupe to name a few. See His full list of the 8 Foods to Give Your Immune System a Boost.

Meditation-What Have You Got To Lose?

Adding a few minutes to your daily routine can add benefits to enhance your life. Meditation does not need to take very long. It can be done without the need for any special equipment. And you can actually meditate anywhere and just about anytime. While driving would not be recommended. LOL

No Need To Sit Cross-Legged On The Floor

You can if you want to but there is no need. In fact, I like to teach people to meditate while sitting in a chair. That way they can add the practice at work or just about anywhere else they find themselves. There are even some good apps that will help you learn to meditate. Meditation is, after all, nothing more than training the mind to stay. Try Insight Timer or Headspace. With Insight Timer you can choose from hundreds of guided meditations to listen to. Simply choose one, put on your headphones and drift away. Headspace offers you mental training exercises to help you improve focus and also to relax. Both apps provide huge benefits. And the great news is you only need to spend about 10 minutes a day. The key is to get into a routine and practice regularly. If you are sick or you know that your immune system is weakened do the exercises 3 times a day.
